About The Artist
I am an oil painter who has developed an innovative technique for painting on aluminum, utilizing its texture and reflective surface as a support for painting. I repetitively paint scenes from childhood photographs, from my memories, or from observations (or observational photographs) that connote a feeling of nostalgia. By repainting the same scenes over and over again, I am able to engage deeply with the subject matter (often figures) to unpack temporality, psychological nuance, and to make visible what is invisible. I am often aware of the connection to the original photographer: their place is taken first by me and then in turn by the viewer of my paintings. I collaborate with them over time, and am also left to wonder who they exactly are (Mother? Grandmother? Father? other…) There is something sweet and mildly sinister about this connection.
Through the joyful and sensorial/embodied act of painting, I hope to tap into the richness of life. I see painting as an act of listening to muse, which is the Holy Spirit. I am compelled to paint in truth and to learn to understand the truth more deeply. I am convicted by hope, and wish to share that sweetness, even in paintings of lamentation. Furthermore, I both seek restoration, and hope to be an agent of it. To me, this looks like being honest about what is sinister, so that we might learn to suppress it, and being authentic in joyfulness, so that we might learn to express it.
My practice is meditative and intuitive. I respond to the texture of the paint, the compositional elements of the photographs and previous paintings, and the many facets of the painting support. I have developed the use of aluminum as a support, due to its smooth texture, its neutral colour, and its reflective nature (it reflects light and colour, but not volume, i.e. you can’t see your face reflected in the painting). This surface appears both ephemeral and solid, fragile and strong.
